Featured treatment for York County families

LightForce custom 3D-printed braces in Newport News

Peninsula Orthodontics is one of the few providers in the area offering LightForce Generative Braces. Dr. Reese starts with a digital scan and directs the treatment setup, then each bracket is 3D-printed for the individual tooth instead of being selected from a standard bracket kit.

Yorktown, Grafton, and Tabb patients receive LightForce consultations and treatment at our Oyster Point Road office. It is a fixed-braces option for teens and adults who want a treatment plan built around their smile.

Why York County families make the drive

The specialist office is on Oyster Point Road, a familiar trip from York County

Yorktown, Grafton, and Tabb share York County schools, Route 17, and Victory Boulevard, but they do not share the same driveway to the office. What they do share is a practical reason to come to Newport News: the orthodontist, the i-CAT scan, the iTero scanner, and the treatment plan are all in one place. A satellite visit cannot replace that.

Oyster Point is already part of the week for many York County households. City Center, Jefferson Avenue, and the shops around Patrick Henry sit on the same side of I-64. The office has nearby parking, and the trip does not cross the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Appointment days are every other Monday and Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, so after-school and work visits can be planned around a known drive.

See the Newport News and Oyster Point office page for the full location details.

One office

Near Yorktown, located in Newport News

Serving Yorktown means families are welcome at the Newport News office. It does not mean there is a Yorktown address, suite, or second waiting room.

From Yorktown

Route 17 south, then I-64 west

From the village, the Riverwalk, and neighborhoods near York High School, the usual drive is south on George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) through Grafton. Route 17 becomes J. Clyde Morris Boulevard at the Newport News line and meets I-64 at Exit 258. From there, take I-64 west to Exit 256 for Oyster Point Road, then continue west across Jefferson Avenue toward the office at 401 Oyster Point Road. In ordinary traffic the trip is often about 20 to 30 minutes. It is longer when I-64 is heavy in the afternoon.

From Grafton

The shortest of the three trips

Grafton already sits on Route 17, between Yorktown and the Newport News line, close to Grafton High School and the I-64 interchange. Families here typically continue to Exit 258 and take I-64 west one exit to Jefferson Avenue, or use Victory Boulevard (Route 171) toward the same side of town. The office is often about 15 to 20 minutes away, which is why Grafton families can treat a braces check as part of an errand to City Center or Jefferson Avenue rather than a cross-river appointment.

From Tabb

Victory Boulevard toward Oyster Point

Tabb families, including households near Tabb High School, Big Bethel Road, and the Kiln Creek edge of York County, already use Victory Boulevard. Westbound Victory reaches I-64 at Exit 256 or continues toward Jefferson Avenue. Either way, the last leg is south to Oyster Point Road, Suite D. Plan on about 15 to 25 minutes. Victory Boulevard is slower after school dismissal and at the end of the workday, so a midmorning or early afternoon visit is usually the easier drive.

Who you are driving to see

Board-certified care from a Peninsula practice established in 1989

York County families are not starting over with a new name. Peninsula Orthodontics has served Newport News and neighboring communities since 1989. Dr. Steven Reese, the practice owner, joined in August 2017.

ABO

Board certified

Dr. Reese is certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, a step about 30 percent of orthodontic specialists complete. He has more than 20 years of experience and holds a master's degree in orthodontics from Indiana University.

About ABO certification

1989

Peninsula history

The practice has been part of this community for more than three decades. Patients from Yorktown, Grafton, and Tabb are seen in the same Newport News office that has been the home base for that work.

What sets the practice apart

DDS

Dr. Reese

He is a retired colonel who served in the Navy and the Air Force, including time as a general dentist with Marines in Okinawa and later as commander of the dental squadron at Langley Air Force Base. That background is familiar to Yorktown households connected to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and the broader military community.

What to expect at your first visit

Treatment for York County households

Braces, Invisalign, early care, teens, adults, and LightForce

A consultation at the Newport News office is where Dr. Reese matches the appliance to the bite. These are the options Yorktown, Grafton, and Tabb families ask about most.

Fixed braces

Braces

Metal braces remain the dependable choice for a lot of growing bites. Today's brackets are smaller than the ones many parents remember. The practice uses LightForce for customized silver braces and Iconix champagne metal braces from American Orthodontics. Teens at York, Grafton, and Tabb can still pick colors when that option fits the bracket system.

Braces treatment options

Clear aligners

Invisalign

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are a strong fit when someone wants a removable aligner for school, a shipyard schedule, or a job that keeps them in front of other people. Aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day and come out for meals. The iTero scanner maps the teeth without a traditional impression, and visits are often about every six weeks, which keeps the Oyster Point trip from becoming a weekly event.

Custom 3D-printed braces

LightForce

LightForce Generative Braces start with a digital scan and a setup Dr. Reese directs. Each bracket is 3D-printed for that tooth instead of being pulled from a standard kit. Peninsula Orthodontics is one of the few providers in the area offering LightForce. It is a fixed-brace option for teens and adults who want that level of customization and still want the appliance to stay on the teeth between visits from York County.

Around age 7

Early treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic checkup by age seven. Early, or Phase One, treatment often begins around age eight or nine when a bite problem should be guided while a child is still growing. Parents from Tabb, Grafton, and Yorktown elementary schools use that first visit to learn whether the next step is observation, an appliance, or simply a recall. Invisalign First is one option for younger children who are still learning to brush around braces.

Early orthodontic treatment

York, Grafton, and Tabb

Teen treatment

Most comprehensive treatment happens between about 12 and 16, when permanent teeth are in and schedules are already full of sports, band, and jobs. The Newport News office works around those calendars on the days it is open. Teens compare metal braces, ceramic braces, Invisalign Teen, and LightForce at the consultation, then keep routine visits on a four- to eight-week rhythm instead of driving down after every practice.

Teen orthodontic treatment

After the growth years

Adult treatment

About one in five orthodontic patients is over 21. Adults from York County come for crowding that has gotten harder to clean, a bite that never got finished as a teen, or a smile they want to change before a promotion or a retirement ceremony. Invisalign, LightForce, and traditional braces are all on the table. Growth is finished, so the plan is sometimes coordinated with a dentist or, when needed, a surgeon.

Technology at the Newport News office

i-CAT cone beam imaging and the iTero scanner

York County families make one trip for the records that used to mean a separate imaging appointment and a mouth full of impression material.

i-CAT / CBCT

3D imaging on site

Peninsula Orthodontics was the first office on the Virginia Peninsula to offer the i-CAT Flex V17 cone beam system. A scan of about five to nine seconds gives a three-dimensional view of teeth, roots, and jaws that a flat x-ray cannot. Dr. Reese uses it for impacted teeth, bite problems, and treatment planning, and the radiation is lower than a medical CT. When a scan will help the decision, it can be taken at the consultation in Newport News.

i-CAT cone beam imaging

iTero

Digital impressions

The iTero intraoral scanner captures thousands of images of the teeth and gums. Those images are used for Invisalign and, for many braces patients, for retainers made before the appliances come off. Traditional impressions are now the exception. Because the model is stored digitally, a lost retainer can often be remade from the scan already on file at the Oyster Point office.

Why it matters on the drive

Fewer reasons to come back twice

For a family leaving Tabb or Yorktown, the useful part is simple. Diagnosis, the scan, the financial conversation, and the treatment recommendation happen at the same address. You can read the financial information before you come, including payment plans, insurance help, and what the coordinators cover at the visit.

York County, in particular

Grafton, Tabb, and York High are already part of the practice's community work

Dr. Reese and the staff give time and support to schools and organizations across the Peninsula. For York County, that list includes Grafton High School, Tabb High School, and York High School. Those three schools are named on the practice's community page alongside other local schools the team has supported.

The office also donates raffle tickets for discounts on orthodontic treatment to local school fundraisers and silent auctions. Since 2016, participating schools can include one orthodontic treatment case per school, per year, in a fundraiser. Schools that have already used that case donation include Peninsula Catholic, St. Mary Star of the Sea, and Denbigh Baptist. A York County school planning an auction can call the office and ask to take part.

What families notice after they start coming to Newport News

These comments are published on the Peninsula Orthodontics testimonials page. The reviews do not list a hometown, so they are not labeled as Yorktown, Grafton, or Tabb patients. They do describe the visit families are asking about: the schedule, the staff, and the trip being worth it.

Questions from York County

Location, the drive, treatment choices, and the first visit

Does Peninsula Orthodontics have an office in Yorktown?

No. The only office is 401 Oyster Point Road, Suite D, Newport News, VA 23602. The practice serves Yorktown, Grafton, and Tabb families from that Newport News address. There is no Yorktown suite, mailbox, or second location.

How do families from Yorktown, Grafton, and Tabb get there?

From Yorktown, drive south on Route 17 through Grafton, enter I-64 west at Exit 258, and leave at Exit 256 for Oyster Point Road. Continue west across Jefferson Avenue toward 401 Oyster Point Road. That trip is often about 20 to 30 minutes. Grafton is closer to the same interchange, often about 15 to 20 minutes. From Tabb, take Victory Boulevard west to I-64 or Jefferson Avenue, then continue to Oyster Point Road. Allow about 15 to 25 minutes, and extra time when Victory Boulevard is busy. The drive stays on the Peninsula and does not use the bridge-tunnel. Open directions in Google Maps.

Where do I park, and what are the hours?

The office is in the Oyster Point area with nearby parking. Hours are every other Monday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, and Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. The office is closed Friday. Call (757) 249-4203 if you want to confirm which Mondays are open before you leave York County.

Can we compare braces, Invisalign, and LightForce at the same visit?

Yes. The consultation is the place to compare metal braces, LightForce custom 3D-printed braces, Invisalign, and early treatment. Dr. Reese recommends the option that fits the bite and the patient's day, including school in York County or an adult work schedule. Start with the pages on braces, Invisalign, and LightForce.

Do you see children, teens, and adults from York County?

Yes. Early checkups often start around age seven. Teens from York, Grafton, and Tabb are a large part of the practice. Adults are welcome too, including people who started treatment years ago and want to finish it. Read more about early treatment, teens, and adults.

What happens at the first visit?

Call or request a time, and the team schedules you to meet Dr. Reese. The visit includes a review of health history, photographs, a full orthodontic evaluation, and a conversation about which treatment fits. A CBCT scan can be taken that day when it will help the decision. The treatment coordinator goes through the plan, insurance, and payment options before anything is started. Details are on the first visit page and the financial information page.

How often will we need to drive down after treatment starts?

Braces adjustments are usually every four to eight weeks. Invisalign checkups are often about every six weeks. The scheduling team asks which days work. If you are running late on Route 17 or Victory Boulevard, call the office and they will try to keep the visit intact.
